I have a new LG DVD burner & nero express 9 & have been trying to burn downloaded torrent movies to DVD. Any extra dvd converting and authoring software needed? If so, step by step guide is preferred. I am a computer idiot.

any idea?

First, burn what DVD, data DVD or playable DVD?

nero express 9 is enough to burn popular formats of movies to data DVD, no other software is required. Simply click Make Data DVD after selecting DVD on top. To make a playable DVD, Nero will always do the job, say AVI to DVD, ISO to DVD, and so son. Following two dvd authoring software is my additional selection to burn downloaded torrent media file onto playable dvd.

To combine multiple downloaded movies and even photos into new movie and burn to DVD with customized menus, I usually use Wondershare Movie Story. Supported movie formats: asf, avi, dat, flv, wmv, mov, mp4, vob, mpg, mpeg, 3gp and rmvb if corresponding decoder is installed.

To burn downloaded movies with subtitle, you could also try freeware DVD Flick. DVD Flick is the all-in-one tool that can convert:
AVI to DVD, FLV to DVD, HDMOV to DVD, MKV to DVD, MJPG to DVD, MPG to DVD, M2V to DVD, MP4 to DVD, M4V to DVD, NSV to DVD, NUT to DVD, QT to DVD, MOV to DVD, RM to DVD, SMK to DVD, OGM to DVD, WMV to DVD, ASF to DVD, 3GP to DVD, 3G2 to DVD, ISO to DVD. DVD Flick only provides limited menu templates. Here is the step by step guide.

Note that if your movie file is in RAR format, you are recommended to install WinRAR to extrac movie first, and then use Nero or DVD Flick to burn DVD.

Tips for burning DVD
1. Using high-quality DVD of reputable brand, as well as blank disc.
2. Using slower speeds for the best quality in your final DVDs. Slowly burnt discs can be played in more machines than quickly burnt onces.

Excellent answer by jWindz.

I will add that if the movies are encoded in DivX or XviD (most torrent movies are) and your DVD player is DivX compatible (most all newer ones are), then you do not need to convert to burn.

A DivX/XviD movie can be burned to disc (for my DVD player, only to CD-R) as regular data (takes a few minutes) if the DVD player is DivX compatible.
