I recently recieved a note from somebody on here, saying that in the past few days my machine has been sending out viruses. I have run complete scans on my torrent files and the whole system. No viruses. The writer wanted me to click on a link, which I did NOT do for fear it was some kind of trap. Advice?

That message is a scam. Ignore it.
That person is not affiliated with this site.
We are looking in to ways to stop this in the future. |

Hey, thanks for taking the time to reply. I was hopint it was a scam. I scanned and rescanned that drive, and the few torrents I have on it. I did NOT go to the guys site.
Thank you again.
How often do torrents carry viruses? Can you connect me to a link where I can get more information on the subject.

It is actually pretty rare for a torrent download to contain a virus.
Most of the malware in P2P downloads comes with the Gnutella or similar networks.
Malware in a torrent download can be easily avoided by only downloading a torrent where the comments and/or ratings indicate it is clean and real. There are also a number of sites that offer torrents that have been "verified" to be clean and real.
Once a torrent is uploaded its contents can not be altered, so when a torrent has good ratings/comments it is almost certainly OK.
Some sites with good comment/rating systems are listed here:

thanks again JW. I appreciate your vigilance.
BTJunkie, which I have used, does include indicators of a torrents health. That's why I was surprised to recieve that guys post.

btjunkie is my favorite.
It lists quickly and you can see the green or red for good or bad ratings immediately.
isoHunt has more options for verifying, but I find that btjunkie finds me a clean copy of what I want almost always. |
